How to maintain motivation in a long-term role

As humans, we tend to be creatures of habit and sometimes that means we end up staying in the same job for well, longer than we initially anticipated. While there is nothing wrong with this, it can be easy to lose motivation when doing the same thing day in, day out.

In this blog, we share our top tips for maintaining motivation in a long-term role, as well as signs that it's time to call it a day and find new opportunities!

Remind yourself of long-term goals

Ask yourself what you want to get out of your current role in the long-term. Write these goals down and the steps you need to take in order to reach them. Regularly reassess and adjust your goals as needed to stay focused and motivated. If you simply can’t picture yourself reaching new milestones at your current place of work, then you have your answer: it’s time to seek pastures new!

Work-life balance: don’t neglect it

Burnout can quickly drain your motivation. To prevent this, prioritise having a healthy work-life balance. Set boundaries for when you're "off the clock" and make time for hobbies, exercise, and relaxation. A well-balanced life can refresh your mind and keep you motivated for the long run.

Seek support in others

Build a network of colleagues, friends and family who can provide encouragement and support. Share your challenges and triumphs with them. Having a community to lean on can help you navigate obstacles and stay motivated.

Continuously learn and develop

Stagnation can lead to a loss of motivation. Invest in your personal and professional development by seeking opportunities to learn new skills and expand your knowledge. Consider taking courses, attending workshops, or pursuing certifications related to your field. Learning and growth can rekindle your enthusiasm for your role.

Ask yourself: am I happy?

Your level of happiness is often a direct reflection of your job satisfaction. When you're happy in your role, you're more likely to be engaged, productive, and motivated. However, when we’ve been in the same role for a prolonged period of time, it can be easy to lose sight of our wellbeing. Checking in with yourself on a regular basis is paramount, as it allows you to make informed decisions about whether to stay in your current position, seek new opportunities, or make changes to improve your job satisfaction.
